Custom Kydex IWB concealment holster by JB Holstermods against American flag background

How to Choose the Right Custom Holster: IWB vs OWB, Light-Bearing, and Duty Retention Explained

Choosing the right holster isn't just about fit — it's about how you carry, what you carry, and what you need your holster to do under pressure. Whether you're a concealed carrier, a law enforcement professional, or a serious shooter, this guide breaks down everything you need to know to make the right call.

IWB vs OWB: What's the Difference?

The most fundamental holster decision is carry position: inside the waistband (IWB) or outside the waistband (OWB).

IWB holsters sit inside your waistband, between your body and your pants. They're the go-to choice for concealed carry because the firearm rides close to the body and is easily hidden under a shirt or jacket. The tradeoff is that they require a slightly larger waist size and can feel less comfortable during extended wear if not properly fitted.

OWB holsters mount outside the waistband on a belt. They're faster to draw from, more comfortable for all-day wear, and preferred for open carry, range use, and duty applications. Law enforcement and security professionals almost universally run OWB for this reason.

At JB Holstermods, both our IWB concealment holsters and OWB tactical holsters are precision-molded to your exact firearm model — not a generic fit.

What Is a Light-Bearing Holster and Do I Need One?

A light-bearing holster is molded to accommodate a weapon-mounted light (WML) or laser attached to your firearm's rail. If you run a Streamlight TLR-7, TLR-1, SureFire X300, or Olight PL-Mini on your pistol, you need a holster built specifically around that light — a standard holster won't fit and can damage both the holster and the light.

If you carry with a light on your firearm — which is strongly recommended for home defense and duty use — a custom light-bearing holster is non-negotiable. JB Holstermods offers light-bearing configurations for 84+ weapon light models, including the full Streamlight TLR lineup.

What Does Level 2 vs Level 3 Retention Mean?

Retention levels describe how many active security mechanisms a holster has beyond passive friction.

  • Level 1 — Passive retention only. The holster holds the firearm through friction and molded fit. Standard for most concealed carry holsters.
  • Level 2 — Adds one active retention device (such as a thumb break or hood) that must be deliberately disengaged before drawing. Required by many law enforcement agencies and ideal for open carry in high-risk environments.
  • Level 3 — Adds a second active retention device on top of Level 2. The highest standard for duty carry, used by US Marshals, FBI, and tactical units where weapon retention is critical.

If you're in law enforcement, security, or any role where someone might attempt to grab your firearm, a Level 2 or Level 3 duty holster is the right choice. For everyday concealed carry, Level 1 passive retention is typically sufficient.

What Kydex Thickness Should I Look For?

Kydex is the industry-standard thermoplastic used in premium holster manufacturing. It's rigid, lightweight, waterproof, and holds its shape indefinitely — unlike leather, which can collapse and obstruct re-holstering.

The standard thickness for duty and carry holsters is 0.080". This provides the right balance of rigidity and weight. Thinner Kydex (0.060") is lighter but less durable. Thicker (0.093"+) is used for heavy-duty applications but adds unnecessary bulk for most carry setups.

All JB Holstermods holsters are built from 0.080" Kydex, precision-molded and hand-finished by a certified Holstersmith.

What's the Best Holster for My Specific Gun Model?

The best holster is always one molded specifically for your firearm — not a universal fit. Generic holsters introduce slop, inconsistent retention, and can fail to protect the trigger guard properly.

JB Holstermods builds custom holsters for 350+ firearm platforms, including Glock, Canik, Sig Sauer, Smith & Wesson, and specialty models like the Canik Prime Radian. Every holster is formed to the exact gun model, test-fitted, and finished by hand before shipping.

Where Can I Buy a Custom Light-Bearing Holster?

JB Holstermods specializes in custom Kydex holsters with light-bearing configurations for the most popular weapon lights on the market. Every holster is made to order in the USA by a certified Holstersmith — no overseas manufacturing, no generic molds.
